Notable Mid-week series.
New York Mets at Philadelphia: Both teams looked improved. Mets are out to a 14-11 start to the season. That’s with the 29th ranked team batting average in baseball at .218 season to date. They are getting good starting pitching from Niese, Gee, Mejia, Wheeler and Colon.
Phillies beat the Dodgers three of four and Diamondbacks 2 of 3 on the road last week and enter play on Tuesday at 13-12. Cole Hamels returned from the DL. Chase Utley is out to a good start hitting .360. There was spring training tension between manager Ryan Sandberg and Jimmy Rollins. Burnett, Lee Kendrick is performing well. Roberto Hernandez has been shaky.
Tampa Bat at Boston: Both teams slow out of the gate. Rays 11-15 and Red Sox 12-14 entering Tuesday. The Rays have been beat up. They lost two of three at home to Minnesota and three of four at Chicago White Sox last week. The pitching has struggled as the club has given up six runs or greater in five of six games.
Boston is looking for consistency at the plate and at the mound. Jake Peavy and Jon Lester needs some run support. John Lackey has looked good but has had some poor starts early. Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubrount have struggled with ERA’s in the 6’s.
Oakland at Texas: Oakland takes Game 1 of this AL West series as they knock out Yu Darvish early. Texas swept Oakland on the road last week. The Rangers trails the Athletics by 1 game in the standings entering Tuesday. Oakland has overcome the Josh Johnson fiasco at the closing position. Sonny Gray has been a bright spot in the starting rotation along with Scott Kazmir and Jesse Chavez. Daniel Straily has struggled. The Athletics are fifth in the league in runs scored at 4.88.
Texas has had some pitching concerns but Martin Perez, Robbie Ross and Yu Darvish have pitched well in the rotation. 23 year old Nicholas Martinez has pitched well. Alex Rios, Shin Soo Choo and Loenys Martin are hitting over .300.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees—Cano returns to New York. Mariners offense struggling big time. Winners of three of four at home and beat Texas 2 of 3 as they head to New York on Tuesday.

New York Yankees sit atop of AL East at 15-10. Elisbury and Solarte hitting well. Jeter is up to .275. Carlos Beltran has five homers. Ichiro hitting .333. Masahiro Tanaka has 46 strikeouts in 35 2/3rd innings. CC, Kuroda and Nuno need to step up. Michael Pineda has put up good numbers with an ERA of 1.83 despite pine tar suspension.
Notable weekend series:
Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox: Athletics are fourth in both Team ERA and WHIP. Boston is just 5-8 at home heading into Tuesday.

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves:
That Atlanta pitching staff has been phenomenal this season. Team ERA of 2.04 and WHIP of 1.06. Shame on their offense. Club should be better than 17-7 this season. Aaron Harang ERA of 0.85in 31 2/3rd innings pitched. He is getting is breaking ball and changeup for strikes. I was wondering why Atlanta cut Freddy Garcia for him. Now we know why.
San Francisco sweeps Cleveland over the weekend and sits atop the NL West at 15-11 entering play on Tuesday. The bats have cooled off a bit as the club has a team batting average of .235. Key to the Giants is getting Matt Cain, Ryan Vogelsong and Tim Lincecum right.
St Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs:
St Louis is at 14-13 and has had trouble scoring runs putting up 3.41 per game and hitting .242 as a team. The have the third ranked pitching staff in all of baseball with an ERA of 2.81 and WHIP of 1.13. Yadier Molina, Matt Adams, Matt Holliday and Matt Carpenter are carry the load for St Louis at the plate.
Cubs are 8-16 heading into play on Tuesday. The offensive has been brutal. They push across just 3.67 runs per game and hit .231 as a team. The starting staff has shown promise with Jeff Samardzija, Jason Hammel and Travis Wood putting up good numbers. Poor Samadzija 0-2 in five starts with an ERA of 1.53 with three no decisions.
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies:
Big injury for Washington as they will lose right fielder Bryce Harper until July with a ligament problem after a head first slide. Starting third baseman Ryan Zimmerman out for a few more weeks with a thumb injury. Starting pitching Doug Fister hits the DL with a back injury. Team is 14-12 and five game in the loss column behind Atlanta.
Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees: Battle between AL East clubs. This division is wide open as the teams are bunched up.
Texas Rangers at LA Angels: Angels at 12-13 so far. The team is hitting as they average 5.44 runs per game. They are getting good performance from their starters. But their bullpen is atrocious as I spoke about last week. The LA Angels need to start betting upper tier AL West clubs like the Rangers and Athletics as they have struggled with both of these clubs in the past.
LA Dodgers at Miami: Dodgers coming off a bad homestand losing six of ten games as they lose three of four to Philadelphia and two of three to Colorado in the final seven games. Their starters are not going deep into games and its taxing the bullpen. Brian Wilson has struggled and has been move out of the setup role. Matt Kemp, Andre Either and Carl Crawford are struggling at the plate. The team has fielding issues as well. Puig returns to Miami and it’s a weekend series.

Miami is an improve club and sits at 11-14 heading into the week. Starters Fernandez, Alvarez, Eovaldi and Koehler have ERA’s under 3.
Talk some NHL and NBA playoffs. Mayweather/Maidana fight and Kentucky Derby.
