SEC West Preview
Florida Gators—
Gators were 9-4 overall and won the SEC East division at 6-2 as no other team finished with a winning record. Malik Zaire transfers to the program. They open with Michigan and their first conference game is September 16th against Tennessee on CBS. Finished 2016 as sixth in the nation in scoring defense allowing 16.8 points per game. They have LSU, Texas A&M and Florida St at home.
Tennessee Volunteers—
The Vols were 9-4 overall but only 4-4 in conference. It was a disappointing year as much more was expected. Joshua Dobbs is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. There is a summer competition at quarterback between junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano. Dormady saw action the past two seasons in relief of Dobbs. The offense moved the football last year for 4442 yards per game. On defense they struggled stopping the run. They get LSU at home but must hit the road to Alabama and Florida.
Georgia Bulldogs—
Georgia was 8-5 overall in 2016 and 4-4 in conference. Today head coach Kirby Smart named Jacob Eason as the starting quarterback. Last year he completed 55% of his passes for 2430 yards and had 16 touchdowns and 8 picks. The Bulldogs struggled offensively finishing 97th in passing and 102nd in the nation in scoring offense putting up 24.5 points per game. Schedule wise they are on the road to Tennessee, Florida and Auburn. They avoid Alabama and LSU.
Kentucky Wildcats—
Kentucky finished 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference. They ran the ball well ranking 20th in the nation with 234 yards per game. Quarterback Stephen Johnson seems to be the favorite to win the job after guiding the Wildcats to a seven win season and a bowl victory. Wildcats struggled on defense ranking 111th against the run and gave up 31 points a game which was 87th in college football. They have a road game at Georgia and have home dates to Louisville, Ole Miss and Florida.
South Carolina Gamecocks—
The team was 6-7 overall and 3-5 in conference. Jake Bentley is the leading contender to start at quarterback. He completed 66% of his passes for 1420 yards with nine touchdowns and four picks seeing action in the final seven games of the season. The Gamecocks were a miserable offensive team ranking 115th in total offense and 116th in scoring putting up 20.8 points per game. They open on the road to NC State and have road games at Texas A&M, Tennessee and Georgia. They get Florida and Clemson at home plus avoid LSU and Alabama.
Vanderbilt Commodores—
Vanderbilt finished 6-7 a season ago and were 3-5 in conference. Looks like head coach Derek Mason is committed to Kyle Shumer under center. He completed only 54.5% of his throws for 2309 yards with nine touchdowns and ten picks. Vandy struggled big time offensively ranking 110th in total offense, 100th in passing with a 113rd ranking in scoring pushing across just 23 points per game. Commodores are at Florida, Ole Miss and Tennessee but get Alabama at home.
Missouri Tigers—
Missouri finished at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in conference. Drew Lock is 6-14 starting at quarterback for the Tigers as he enters his third season. He completed 54.6% of his throws for 3399 yards with 23 touchdowns and 10 picks. Crockett is a good running back but there is little depth behind him. Defense is in need of major improvement as the Tigers were 118th ranked in the nation allowing 480 yards per game. They gave up 233 yards rushing which was 112th and allowed 31.5 points pregame which was 90th in college football. Road games include stops at Georgia and Arkansas and they get Auburn, Florida and Tennessee at home. Missouri avoids LSU and Alabama.
Then we talk MLB, NFL, NBA and More.
