PAC 12 Preview
North Division
Washington—
Huskies finished at 12-2 a season ago and winners of the North division at 9-1 in conference. They crushed Colorado in the PAC 12 title game for a berth into the playoff where they lost to Alabama 24-7. The team returns seven starters on offense and six to the defense. Starting at QB for Chris Peterson is Jake Browning for his junior season. They open at Rutgers and has road games in PAC 12 at Colorado, Arizona St and Stanford. They host UCLA, Oregon, Utah and Washington St.
Washington St—
Cougars finished the 2016 year at 8-5 for head coach Mike Leach who has survived into his sixth year at the school. They fell to Minnesota in the Holiday Bowl 17-12. Seven starters return on offense with nine to the defense. Luke Falk returns under center with two staring receivers back and his running back. They host Boise St out of conference and has home games with USC, Colorado and Stanford. A road schedule in conference has the Cougars at Oregon, Utah and Washington.
Stanford—
Cardinal finished at 10-3 for David Shaw in 2016. The team defeated North Carolina 25-23 in the Sun Bowl. They closed out the year winning six straight but lost big early to Washington, Washington St and close defeat at home to Colorado. Eight starters back on offense and defense. Looks like it will be Keller Chryst a junior returning under center. They lose Christian McCaffery to the NFL. Stanford opens with Rice in Australia and has road games in PAC 12 at USC, Utah and Washington St. They host Notre Dame out of conference plus has home PAC 12 games to UCLA, Oregon and Washington.
Oregon St—
It was a disappointing 4-8 year for head coach Gary Anderson with the Beavers. They haven’t been in a bowl game for three straight seasons. Junior Jake Luton will start at quarterback a transfer who is 6’7”. Seven starters back on offense and eight to the defense. Luton will find all of the playmakers back on offense for the Beavers. Oregon St opens at Colorado St and has PAC 12 road games at Washington St, USC and Oregon. They host Minnesota in the non-conference and host PAC 12 teams Washington, Colorado and Stanford.
California—
Cal finished at 5-7 and failed to earn a bowl berth. Hired was Justin Wilcox as he coaches his first year with the school. Returning are six starters of offense and eight to the defense. There is a battle for the starting quarterback position with three in the running. The offensive line is inexperienced by most of the playmakers are back. Cal has been an atrocious defense since Tedford left. They open at North Carolina and travel in PAC 12 to Oregon, Washington, Colorado, UCLA and Stanford. Cal will host Ole Miss and has home games with USC and Washington St.
Oregon—
Willie Taggart begins his first year with the school as the Ducks finished at 4-8 in 2016 missing a bowl game. Eight starters return on offense with eight to the defense. Sophomore Justin Herbert starts at quarterback. Two of his three starting wide outs are back and the offensive line is experienced. They host Nebraska and have home games in the PAC 12 against Washington St, Utah and their rival Oregon St. The Ducks hit the road in the PAC 12 to play at Stanford, UCLA and Washington.
South Division
Colorado—
Buffaloes were the surprise winners of the South division in 2016 as they finished with an overall record of 10-4. Mike MacIntre is in his fifth season after taking the Buffaloes to the Alamo Bowl where they lost to Oklahoma St 38-8. Nine starters return on offense but only three to the defense. Sophomore Steven Montez is the team’s first year starter at quarterbacks. The good news on offense is that the team returns many starters on the offensive line and all of the playmakers. They face Colorado St on a neutral field and play on the road in the PAC 12 at UCLA, Washington St and Utah. Buffaloes host Washington and USC.
USC—
USC finished at 10-3 overall and won the Rose Bowl 52-49 to Penn St. They were second in the south division and earned the Rose Bowl bid as Washington made the playoff. Clay Helton has holes to fill on offense with five starters back with seven to the defense. Heisman candidate Sam Darnold returns for his sophomore campaign. Ronald Jones returns at tailback but plenty of first year starters out wide and on the offensive line. USC will face Texas at home in the non-conference and host in the PAC 12 Stanford, Utah and UCLA. They travel to Notre Dame and in the PAC 12 play at Washington St and Colorado.
Arizona St—
Sun Devils were a 5-7 team missing a bowl berth for head coach Todd Graham in his sixth year at the school Returning are seven starters on offense and six to the defense. Junior Manny Wilkins returns as the starter under center. His backfield is back from last year with two wide outs. Offensive line has had turnover. ASU travels to Texas Tech and plays on the road in the PAC 12 at Stanford, Utah and UCLA. Sun Devils in conference host Washington, Oregon, Colorado and rival Arizona.
UCLA—
Bruins were one of the biggest disappointments in college football last year finishing at 4-8 and out of a bowl game for Jim Mora Jr. Returning are nine starters of offense and six to the defense. Josh Rosen enters his junior season in 2017 after an injury plagued 2016. All his playmakers are back with turnover at tight end and at left tackle. They open at home to Texas A&M and face at home in the PAC 12 Colorado and Oregon. Bruins will travel out of conference to Memphis and in the PAC 12 at Stanford, Washington, Utah and USC.
Arizona—
It was a bad read for head coach Rick Rodriguez at Arizona in 2016 as they finished at 3-9 and missed a bowl game. They had a scare at home in week two to Grambling winning by 10 as a 45 point favorite. Seven starters are back on offense and to the defense. The starting quarterback job is between incumbent Brandon Dawkins and 27 year old freshman Donovan Tate who was a MLB first rounder with the Padres who couldn’t make the big club. Heavy turnover in the passing game with the line experienced. Arizona will host Houston and has home games in the PAC 12 against Utah, UCLA, and Washington St. Wildcats are on the road in the PAC 12 at Colorado, USC, Oregon and rival Arizona St.
