BIG 12 Preview
Oklahoma—
Lincoln Riley takes over the head coaching duties for a retiring Bob Stoops. Riley the former offensive coordinator of the Sooners. Team finished 11-2 a year ago and defeated Auburn 35-19 in the Sugar Bowl. Back are 9 starters on offense and 7 to the defense. Senior Baker Mayfield returns as the starting QB for an offense that put up 43.9 points per game a season ago. Offensive line returns all five starters. Sooners will travel to Ohio St in the non-conference and has Big 12 games on the road to Baylor, Kansas St and Oklahoma St. They host Texas Tech, TCU and West Virginia. They battle Texas on a neutral field in Texas.
Oklahoma St—
Cowboys were 10-3 in 2016 and crushed Colorado in the Alamo Bowl 38-8. Mike Gundy returns for his 13th season with seven starters on offense and five to the defense. Senior QB Mason Rudolph returns. Their offense in 2016 posted 495 yards with 38.6 points per game. They travel in the non-conference to Pittsburgh and play on the road in the Big 12 at Texas Tech, Texas and West Virginia. Cowboys meet TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas St at home.
West Virginia—
Mountaineers finished 2016 at 10-3 and lost to Miami 31-14 in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Dana Holgorsen had an inexperienced squad with five starters of offense and three to the defense. Transfer Will Grier a junior from Florida will start at QB. Four new starters in the secondary and defensive line. Mountaineers meet Virginia Tech on a neutral field in the opener. They travel in conference to TCU, Baylor, Kansas St and Oklahoma. Home games in the Big 1 to Texas Tech, Oklahoma St and Texas.
Kansas St—
Wildcats finished at 9-4 for head coach Bill Snyder in 2016. They beat Texas A&M 33-28 in the Texas Bowl. Senior Jesse Ertz lines up under center for a Wildcats offense that has eight returning starters. The defense has six starters back with their linebackers lacking experience. Kansas St meets Vanderbilt on the road in the non-conference and faces Big 12 opponents on the road at Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma St. Wildcats at home will meet Baylor, TCU and West Virginia.
TCU—
Garry Patterson finished with a rare losing record at Texas Tech last year at 6-7. They lost to Georgia 31-23 in the Liberty Bowl. 10 starters return on offense with 7 to the defense. Senior Kenny Hill is slotted to start at Quarterback. They saw a point reduction of 11 from the previous season as the team put up 31.3 points per game last year. Their defense is no longer dominant allowing 28 a game. Horned Frogs meet Arkansas on the road in the non-conference and will meet on the road in the Big 12 Oklahoma St, Kansas St, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. They are at home to West Virginia, Texas and Baylor.
Texas—
The Tom Herman era begins at Texas. Longhorns finished at 5-7 in 2016 and missed a bowl game for the second consecutive year. Seven starters are back on offense with ten to the defense. Shane Buechele is the starting quarterback as he enters his sophomore year. Four of his five starters return on the offensive line. Texas meets USC on the road and have conference homes games to Kansas St, Oklahoma St and Texas Tech. They travel in the Big 12 at TCU, Baylor and West Virginia. Texas meets Oklahoma on a neutral site.
Texas Tech—
Texas Tech finished at 5-7 for head coach Kliff Kingsbury and failed to make a bowl game for the second time in three seasons. Senior Nick Shimonek is a first year starting quarterback as the team returns seven to the offense with experience at the wide receiver positing. Six starters return to a defense that allowed 43.5 points along with 554 yards per game. Red Raiders will meet Houston on the road in the non-conference and face on the road in the Big 12 West Virginia, Oklahoma and Texas. They play at home Oklahoma St, Kansas St and TCU. They have Baylor in Arlington Texas.
Baylor—
Matt Rhule make his debut at Baylor. Bears were 7-6 a year ago as they beat Boise St in the Cactus Bowl 31-2. Six starters return on offense with seven to the defense. There is no decision yet made for the starter under center. Local writers expect sophomore Zach Smith to win the job. The offense saw a decline of 13.5 points per game in 2016 as they pushed across 34.6 points per game. Baylor travels to Duke in the non conference with road games at Kansas St, Oklahoma ST and TCU. They face Oklahoma st home with West Virginia and Texas. They battle Texas Tech in Jerry’s World.
Iowa St—
Iowa St was 3-9 for Matt Campbell who enters his second season with the school. Back are five to the offense and six to the defense. They have not been to a bowl since the 2012 campaign. Junior Jacob Park starters under center and has experienced playmakers. They host Iowa and has home games in the Big 12 to Texas, TCU and Oklahoma St. They meet on the road Oklahoma, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Baylor and Kansas St.
Kansas—
Year for year one of the worst teams in the Major Conferences. Finished at 2-10 in 2016. David Beaty returns for his 3rd season as head coach with eight starters back on offense with five to the defense. Peyton Bender a junior starts at quarterback a transfer from Washington St. Bender has experienced playmakers. Three first year starters line up in the secondary. Jayhawks meet Ohio in the non-conference on the road and meet in the Big 12 on the highway TCU, Texas and Oklahoma St. They meet at home West Virginia, Texas Tech, Kansas St, Baylor and Oklahoma.
