ACC Atlantic Preview
Clemson Tigers—
Defending national championship who finished with a 14-1 record. Their lone loss came in a 43-42 defeat at home to Pittsburgh. They beat Ohio St 31-0 in the semis and Alabama 35-31 in the national title game. 12 starters return in total to the team. Must replace quarterback DeShaun Watson and wide out Mike Williams where were leaders in their position. There is a competition at quarterback between junior Kelly Bryant and freshman Hunter Johnson. They have an out of conference home game against Auburn and games in the ACC at home to Georgia Tech and Florida St. They travel to Louisville, Virginia Tech and an out of conference matchup at South Carolina.
Louisville Cardinals—
The team finished at 9-4 overall in 2016 and 7-1 in conference. They dropped a 29-9 decision to LSU in the Citrus Bowl. The team returns Heisman candidate Lamar Jackson at quarterback but the offense sees only four returning starters. The offensive line is inexperienced. Louisville was 14th in total defense last year allowing 322 yards per game and that side of the ball has seven starters back. They travel in conference to North Carolina and at NC State on a short week. A huge test at Florida St and they play their rival Kentucky on the road. Cardinals get Clemson at home. In out of conference action it is a trip to Indianapolis to play Purdue in the opener.
Florida St Seminoles—
The Seminoles finished 10-3 overall and only 5-3 in the ACC. They beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl 33-32. Sophomore Deondre Francois is under center as the team has six starters back on offense and nine to the defense. We saw digression defensively for Florida St last year especially against the pass where they allowed 221 yards passing per game which was 57th in the nation. Florida St opens with Alabama in Atlanta. They host Miami, NC State and Louisville. The Seminoles go on the road to meet Clemson and close at Florida.
NC State Wolfpack—
The Wolfpack finished 7-6 overall a year ago and were 3-5 in the ACC. They beat Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl 41-17 as a 5 point favorite. Returning under center for NC State will be junior Ryan Finley who has most of his playmakers back. Wolfpack has nine starters back on offense with eight to the defense. They open up on a neutral field with South Carolina. They travel to Florida St, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame and has home games with Clemson, Louisville in a quick turnaround and North Carolina.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons—
The Demon Deacons were 7-6 in 2016 and went 3-5 in the ACC. They beat Temple in the Military Bowl 34-26 as a 12 point underdog. Junior quarterback Kendall Hinton returns and has all his playmakers back as the team has nine returning on offense. Defensively just give starters back. The offense struggled last year with Wake Forest with the 124th ranked offense with 311 yards per game. Demon Deacons scored just 20.4 points a game which was 119th in the nation. Their defense held teams to 22.2 a game ranking 23rd in college football. Wake Forest travels to Clemson, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. They will host Louisville, Florida St and NC State.
Boston College Eagles—
The Eagles were 7-6 overall and 2-6 in the ACC. Eight starters return offensively and seven to the defense. BC beat Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl 36-30 as a 2 point underdog. Junior Darius Wade is the favorite to start at quarterback. He takes over an offense that was 127th ranked overall and 120th passing. They averaged just 20.4 points per game which was 118th in the nation. BC allowed 314 yards per game which was ninth in the nation. BC has home dates with Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Florida St and NC State. The Eagles are on the road to Louisville and Clemson.
Syracuse Orange—
Syracuse finished up play in 2016 with a mark of 4-8 overall and 2-6 in conference. They missed a bowl game for the third straight season. Junior Eric Dungey returns under center for an experienced unit with 9 starters back on offense and ten to the defense. Defense was a major issue at Syracuse as the Orange allowed an average of 501 yards per game which was 122nd in the nation. Opponents scored 38 points a game on them which was 120th. They couldn’t stop the run nor pass. On a positive note the team was 11th in passing tossing for 321 yards per game. Syracuse has road games at LSU, NC State, Miami, Florida St and Louisville. They host Pittsburgh and Clemson.
